What is Matcha?

Matcha is ground green tea leaves, that have been ground into a fine powder.

Tips for the Perfect Matcha Latte

Below we are sharing a couple tips for how to make this easy matcha latte recipe. Mainly it comes down to the type of matcha powder and how you’re going to make it.

Pick a High Quality Matcha Powder

When you’re making a matcha green tea latte, the hardest part is starting because you have to pick your matcha powder. There are so many options out there! What’s the difference between baking grade, ceremonial, culinary, etc.?

Well, I’ve found my favorite matcha powder is this first harvest latte grade powder.

If the brand you found doesn’t label their matcha green tea powder as “latte” grade, then be sure to select “ceremonial grade matcha” for the best flavor and quality.Avoid “culinary grade” as that is meant for baking and cooking.

Pick Your Tool

The next part that can make or break having the perfect matcha latte is getting it smooth and perfectly blended.

A lot of people use a bamboo matcha whisk (how matcha is traditionally made), but if you don’t have one, don’t let that stop you. You can use amilk frother, this metal whiskor even animmersion blender.

TIP:For an iced latte, the immersion blender is my favorite way to get the powder completely dissolved with minimal effort.

4 Ingredients for an Iced Matcha Latte

This is an easy recipe with simple ingredients! You don’t need much:

  • matcha powder– You want to be sure to buy a good quality matcha powder so your latte doesn’t have a bitter taste. This oneis my favorite.Make sure you’re buying pure unsweetened matcha powder, and not a mix of different ingredients.
  • maple syrup– For a lightly sweetened latte, maple syrup works great. You could also substitute agave nectar, honey or make a simple syrup as well.
  • milk– My favorite milk for this recipe has been oat milk. But you could use almond milk, cashew milk, or coconut milk too. Hemp and soy also work! Whatever type of milk you have on hand is fine.
  • water– Using boiling water helps the matcha powder to dissolve easily when being whisked.

Step-By-Step Directions

Making an iced matcha latte can be done in just a few minutes!

Step 1 – Whisk Matcha + Hot Water

First things first, you’ll mix together the hot water and matcha green tea powder. You can do this with a handheld frother, immersion blender, bamboo whisk in a matcha bowl or mini whisk in a cup. Just make sure there are no clumps of matcha in the water.

TIP:If you don’t have any of the above, shake it in a mason jar.

Step 2 – Pour Matcha Over Ice

I like to first add ice to a large cup, then pour the matcha over ice.

Step 3 – Add Milk

Then finally add your milk of choice, give it a stir and taste test.

TIP: You could add a splash of vanilla or mint for some extra flavor!

Step 4 – Taste!

If you want a stronger latte, you can use more matcha powder or you can leave out the water. Just blend the matcha powder with an immersion blender for a few seconds to dissolve into the milk.

Make a Flavored Matcha Latte

There are lots of ways to make this and make it your own.

If you’re looking to add a little more flavor to your matcha latte, try these ideas:

  • add touch of vanilla extract
  • blend in a dash of cinnamon and turmeric along with the matcha powder
  • add some chai spices, my DIY blend linked.
  • make a mint simple syrup

Looking forward to making this! Matcha shouldn’t be made with boiling water, it destroys the antioxidants in the tea. Recommended temp is around 80C.
